Elvas, close to Badajoz in Spain, was almost bound to be fortified, both in wars between Moors and Christians and later in Spain/Portugal conflicts, particularly as it is located on a hill top. Just outside of the walls there is an amazing aqueduct looking almost like more fortifications but carrying only a very narrow water channel.
